Orange juice has a strange reputation. Some people treat it as medicine. Others treat it as barely better than soda. The reality is more interesting than either extreme. A glass of 100% orange juice is one of the most studied foods in nutrition science, and the research paints a surprisingly nuanced picture.

The Sugar Question
Let's address the elephant. An 8-ounce glass of orange juice contains about 21 grams of naturally occurring sugar. That's real sugar, not added sugar. The FDA's labeling rules distinguish between the two, and 100% orange juice has zero added sugar. But the number still makes some people nervous, so let's look at what it actually means.
The glycemic index of orange juice is around 50. That's medium, not high. For context, white bread is around 73, and a bowl of cornflakes is around 81. The sugar in OJ is fructose and glucose bound up with water, fiber (some, not much), vitamins, and minerals. It's not the same thing as the dissolved sucrose in a can of soda, even if the raw gram count looks similar.
That said, OJ is calorie-dense compared to whole fruit. An 8-ounce glass runs about 112 calories. You can drink it faster than you'd eat three oranges (which is roughly what that glass represents). The research consensus is that moderate consumption (a glass a day) is associated with positive health outcomes, while excessive consumption adds calories without the satiety of whole fruit.
What the Research Actually Shows

It's worth being clear about what this research doesn't prove. No single food prevents disease. Most of these studies are observational, which means they show correlation, not causation. People who drink 100% orange juice also tend to have other healthy habits. But the consistency of the signal across different populations and study designs is why nutrition researchers haven't written OJ off, despite the sugar anxiety of the last decade.
Why Processing Changes Everything
Here's where the conversation gets practical. The research above applies to 100% orange juice, preferably fresh or minimally processed. The story is different for juice that's been stripped, stored, reconstituted, and dosed with flavor packs.
Vitamin C degrades when exposed to heat and oxygen. Juice that's been de-aerated and stored in tanks for months has measurably less of it. Hesperidin is concentrated near the peel. Cold-pressed juice, which uses hydraulic pressure that extracts from the whole fruit, retains more of it than centrifugal extraction. The processing method isn't just about taste. It changes what's nutritionally in the glass.
This is the strongest argument for California's NFC, cold-pressed standard. It's not just about flavor. The compounds that make orange juice worth drinking are the same compounds that are most fragile. The less you process the fruit, the more of them survive into the glass.
